the gateway.

Too often people do not understand the complexity of my degree and I have to fight for that; which validates my passion for communication and organization. Since I am a first generation college student and my degree isn’t well known, people tend to misinterpret what my career will be. I hope to explain it. Society as a whole tends to give credit to people who become doctors or lawyers, which is amazing but the perspective is too narrow. Without every single person working together, without all of the combined career fields, the world would most definitely not be the same. Every person is just as important as all the others. (Within reason, c’mon guys I don’t want to start a debate) :) My purpose is to explain my career choice and hopefully enlighten people along the way. . I am choosing to major in organizational communication. From a definition aspect it means working with organizations. “Organizational communication is a subfield of the larger discipline of communication studies. Organizational communication, as a field, is the consideration, analysis, and criticism of the role of communication in organizational contexts.” (Wikipedia) Whether the organization is a non-profit, Best Buy, Chesapeake, or a local grocery store, they are all organizations and for them to be able to succeed and provide people with goods and services; they need communication. The communication that is needed may be in the form of a flyer announcing a sale or it could be as complex as the general manager talking to all employees. Communication is the foundation for everything in this world; whether it is verbal or nonverbal. And listening plays a huge role in my career. It is easy to hear someone, but to actually listen to someone has become such a chore in today’s society with all of the technological advancements distractions. And I could go on and on about that but that’s an entirely different discussion. In order to get people on the same page it can be extremely difficult because every person has their own views and desires, and that is where a communication major comes into play; they are a part of everyday life. People who are passionate about helping others, being informed, making sure things are organized from a variety of perspectives and ensuring communication is heard from all levels is just a glimpse of what my career is filled with. I hope to have enlightened you on the importance of my degree and that you will leave with a better understanding of what it takes to be a communication major. It is such a complex subject that I am very passionate about so it has been difficult to explain it without talking about other things. Thank you for taking the time to read this, honestly. And feel free to make any comments or ask any questions!
